Mrs Brown has scored the biggest opening of an Irish film in Ireland

Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie has proved a hit at the UK and Ireland box office after taking £4.3 million in its opening weekend.

The movie is based on the popular BBC comedy series about Mrs Brown, and sees the market stall owner set out on an entertaining mission to save her and her family’s livelihood from a determined developer.

O’Carroll’s film broke a record in Ireland to score the largest ever opening day of an Irish movie in the country.

Elsewhere in the chart, John Green adaptation The Fault in Our Stars dropped to number two and sequel 22 Jump Street slipped one place into third.

Disney’s Maleficient, starring Angelina Jolie, is in fourth place while Jon Favreau’s Chef reached a disappointing fifth.

Last summer, TV to big screen adaptation Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa opened to £2.2 million – almost half the takings of Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.

But O’Carroll’s effort fell short of The Inbetweeners Movie, which earned £13 million in its first weekend in 2011 and £57 million in total.

The cast of Mrs Brown’s Boys will be heading on tour in 2015 with a series of dates confirmed for arenas in spring, summer and winter. Tickets for the new stage show, How Now Mrs Brown Cow, will go on sale this Friday at 10am.

A new TV series is also expected on BBC One at the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015. The last run picked up the prize for Best Comedy at the National Television Awards in January after winning the hotly-contested Christmas Day TV ratings battle.
