Space Odyssey astronaut suit and Superman cape sell at Hollywood memorabilia auction

The iconic astronaut suit and cape were among the 900 Hollywood memorabilia items available for collectors

The astronaut suit worn in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey has sold for $370,000 (£294,597) at a recent auction of Hollywood memorabilia.

The costume was among the notable memorabilia auctioned at the recent “Hollywood: Legends & Explorers” event held by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the astronaut suit was accompanied by a helmet and is believed to have been worn by Keir Dullea, the actor who played mission pilot and scientist Dr David Bowman in the 1968 film.

A mechanical cape worn by Christopher Reeve in the first two Superman films was also available to purchase. The iconic cape sold for $110,000 (£87,583).

Other notable items included an original tobacco pipe used by Sir Ian Holm while portraying Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Also on offer was a David Hasselhoff-signed “Knight Rider” 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am which was used in tours and appearances promoting the Knight Rider television series.

The Lord of the Rings pipe sold for $28,200 (£22,453) while the signed Knight Rider car brought in $192,000 (£152,872).
