Ever since it was announced that a Star Wars Han Solo prequel was in the works, talk focused on which young actor could fill the character's shoes.

Now, the most coveted role circling Hollywood has seen hundreds of actors whittled down to just eight.

Variety reports that the list of actors in contention includes Whiplash actor Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Dave Franco (Bad Neighbours) and rising star Jack Reynor who starred in 2014'sTransformers: Age of Extinction.

Rounding out the list are Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), Glee actor Blake Jenner, Emory Cohen - recently seen in Brooklyn - and Scott Eastwood, who's the oldest of the bunch at 29.

Eastwood has a big year ahead with starring roles in both Suicide Squad and Oliver Stone's Edward Snowden biopic, Snowden.

Disney and Lucasfilm executives are expected to make a decision within a fortnight, despite the shoot commencing in January.

Sources claim that the early appointment could lead to a last-minute cameo in Rogue One - the first of three planned Star Wars prequels due out this December.

The untitled Han Solo prequel, directed by The Lego Movie's Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be released 25 May 2018.
