The Woman in the Window trailer: Amy Adams is convinced she’s witnessed a murder

Amy Adams is an agoraphobic psychologist who appears to witness Julianne Moore’s murder in the first trailer for The Woman in the Window.

Adapted from the bestseller by AJ Finn, the film stems from Joe Wright, director of Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, and appears to be very much in the mould of Rear Window and Gone Girl.

Adams is Anna Fox, who is confined to her New York home with only one regular visitor: a kindly neighbour from across the street named Jane (Julianne Moore).

But Anna’s life begins to dramatically unravel when she believes she witnesses Jane’s murder from her bedroom window, only to be told later on that Jane is very much alive – only she looks like an entirely different woman from the Jane she had befriended, and is suddenly played by Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Gary Oldman, Brian Tyree Henry and Anthony Mackie make up the starry supporting cast, while Lady Bird’s Tracy Letts has written the film’s script.

The Woman in the Window was originally scheduled for release this year, but was a momentary victim of Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, which financed the film.

It was reported in July that the film was pushed to 2020 in order to accommodate five days of reshoots. Disney demanded new footage after audiences at test screenings declared it too confusing to understand.

Finn, a pseudonym for novelist Dan Mallory, previously plunged the project into literary scandal when a New Yorker story in February 2019 alleged that he had spent years crafting untruths about his personal life while rising up the ranks of the publishing world.

The Woman in the Window is released in the UK on 15 May.
