Tom Hiddleston stars in vitamin commercial

A new vitamin ad starring Tom Hiddleston has left viewers baffled – and unable to decide whether the one-minute segment is charming or “deeply uncomfortable”.

The one-minute video was shot to advertise Centrum (a brand of multivitamins manufactured and distributed by Pfizer) products in China.

It is shot from the perspective of a woman – presumably, Hiddleston’s character’s significant other – who wakes up to find Hiddleston making her breakfast.

Standing in front of the counter and donning a black apron, the English actor looks at the camera and greets the woman, saying: “Hey!... Morning.”

“I finished early so I thought I’d pop back and make you breakfast,” he adds, before serving up a plate of fruit and vegetables – carefully arranged in rows – topped with a heart-shaped fried egg.

He then grinds fresh pepper over the egg, asking his presumed partner: “Pepper on top, right?”

With this question out of the way, Hiddleston grabs a bottle of vitamins and reminds the woman to take her tablet, in Mandarin.

“You look great,” he says after a brief silence.

Towards the end, Hiddleston puts on his jacket and heads out, telling the woman he will probably be “a bit busy for the next few weeks, but I’ll make it up to you soon, I promise”.

The segment has gone viral on Twitter, where viewers have shared their mixed reactions.

Some were baffled by the components of the breakfast prepared by Hiddleston, which appears to contain raw fruit and vegetables.

Others were perplexed by his character’s relationship with the woman, and mystified as to how and why a man would make a brief appearance in someone’s home, cook breakfast, then announce he’s going to be away for most of the next few weeks.

“Everything about this is cursed,” one viewer wrote about the segment.

“I have questions... He came back early to make her breakfast and he is apparently leaving for work... Where were you all night, Tom??” another person wrote.

Some still thought the ad had some redeeming qualities, such as one viewer who tweeted: “It’s just, weird. Being said, if buying a bottle of Centrum you get a Tom Hiddleston making your breakfast, I’ll be buying in monthly amounts.”

Hiddleston himself hasn’t publicly commented on the commercial. His last tweet is a poster for the forthcoming Avengers: Endgame, featuring his character Loki.
