Wonder Woman takes $101m at US box office, highest ever domestic opening weekend for female director

The superhero flick has grossed $223 million worldwide

Having received rave reviews from critics — along with an 'A' Cinescore from cinema goers —Wonder Woman has smashed a huge milestone, grossing $101 million over the weekend in the US.

Thanks to the huge opening weekend, the Patty Jenkins-directed superhero flick has broken the domestic opening record for a movie helmed by a woman.

The record was previously held by Sam Taylor-Johnson with Fifty Shades of Grey, the adult book adaptation grossing $85.1 million.

At the worldwide box-office, Fifty Shades of Grey retains the record having grossed $242 million compared to Wonder Woman’s opening $223 million.

“This movie resonated globally,” Warner Bros’ Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution boss, told Deadline. “Wonder Woman is a woman for our time, and her message and the tone that Patty Jenkins set forth connects with now.”

Wonder Woman also holds one of the highest opening weekends for a solo-superhero debut, beating Iron Man while falling just behind Deadpool, Man of Steel, and Spider-Man.

Also notable this week, Sofia Coppola became the second female ever to win the best director prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled.

Meanwhile, Wonder Woman managed to anger Fox new commentators for not being ‘American’ enough. The DC film is currently playing in UK and US cinemas.
