This 1942 Disney classic is startlingly simple: a young fawn is thrust into a colourful world of animal life, complete with all the highs and lows of existence: making friends, losing a loved one, and, of course, springtime mating.

Despite being a first-time viewer more accustomed to the comedy and plot-heavy production of Disney's recent efforts, I was overwhelmed by this humble fable. With stark realities – from the increasing threat of man to that scene we don't like to talk about – this beautifully realised animation delivers a palpable message to relish life because it won't go on forever: an excellent excuse if ever one was needed to embrace one's inner child and wallow in this timeless classic.
