The original Karate Kid (1984), with a bright-eyed Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita's shrewd Mr Miyagi, had an awful lot of wit and charm and appealed to bullied teenagers everywhere.
The odds weren't good on replicating its allure, but Harald Zwart's version benefits a lot from a nicely understated performance from Jackie Chan as martial-arts master Mr Han. This time around Jaden Smith (Will's son) plays the bullied boy, Dre Parker, who moves from Detroit to Beijing with his single mom (Taraji P Henson). He quickly falls victim to the school bully after flirting with one of his classmates. Enter the dragon... or Chan's maintenance man. A sweet, undemanding drama.
