DVD: Watchmen, (Paramount)
Many directors tried and failed, so all credit to Zack Snyder for pulling off an adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ peerless superhero saga. It’s complex and ambitious, but in some ways it’s too faithful to the original graphic novel. Snyder crams in too many subplots which will be lost on the uninitiated, and he doesn’t have enough space to let those subplots play out as they did in the comic. Buyer beware: ever-longer director’s cuts are bound to keep coming out for years.
