Ane Brun performs exquisite cover of Radiohead song 'How To Disappear Completely' - premiere

Norwegian artist is releasing her new album of covers, Leave Me Breathless, on 6 October

Leave Me Breathless, the seventh studio release from Norwegian born, Stockholm based artist Ane Brun, is her most personal yet.

Set for release on 6 October, the album consists of 14 cover versions that deal with those overwhelming themes of love and romance.

"The whole project started with me falling head over heels with someone new," Brun explains. "I recorded cover songs for this person because, quite simply, I was overwhelmed by emotions. The love story was short, but, when it ended, I continued the project, since I felt there was a quality to the versions that I´d already finished.

"The original idea had been to interpret love songs, romantic songs – it didn’t have to be a specifically sad or happy love – but, in the end, there are a few songs with other themes as well. It became a concept of simplifying or interpreting emotional songs in my own way."

What are you listening to?

I've always been, since I was very young, one of those who always go digging for new music, and since I now longer go to record stores I now use the digital channels, and if you know how to use their tools it's amazing what you will find.

So I'm listening to lots of obscure stuff but to mention some names it's everything from Aldous Harding, music by Shostakovich, The Blaze, Lucy Rose, PJ Harvey, Kendrick Lamar, Arcade Fire, Jill Scott, James Blake, Lauren Hill, Little Dragon, John Coltrane... it’s an endless and very random list.

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

Well, while my covers-album “Leave Me Breathless” will be coming out, hopefully spreading some love around. I've started writing new music for my next studio album.

I've had quite a break from writing now and I'm really keen on getting into it. I've also just started playing tennis, dancing salsa, going to different courses such as “Navigating at Sea”, so I'm in a phase of wanting to learn new things! I guess it's the upside or perhaps the aftermath of a midlife crisis. Haha!

What was the first gig you ever did?

Amazingly enough it was on the streets of Barcelona! I had rehearsed about 20 cover songs for a year at my student flat in Oslo back in 1998 - songs by PJ Harvey, Joni Mitchell, Ben Harper, Nick Drake, Ani Difranco, Elliot Smith etc, and I decided to do some busking that summer.

The first time I went out into the Ramblas with my guitar was literally the first time I played in public to strangers! I was sooo nervous and I had a little too much wine that first day, so I had to postpone my debut until the next day! But as soon as I got into it, it was super fun! And I met a lot of people I would have never met if I hadn't done that.

What's been the best gig so far?

I've been lucky to do so many different gigs around the world since I first started touring in 2003. I've played at The Red Rocks Theatre, Colorado(US) in a lighting storm, I've had wonderful gigs in London at i.e. Shepherd's Bush Empire, I've played in a small church in Dingle, Ireland, I performed at the modern museum in Moscow and St Petersburg, at a Jazz Festival in Svalbard, a wedding in Marrakech, a university festival in Ankara, city festival in Stockholm (my home since 2001), underneath mountain tops in Norway, at The Hollywood Bowl, at the London O2, the Bestival, the art centre in Melbourne, The WOMAD in NZ, and countless other gigs around the world.

The weird part is that you can never know if a gig is going to be amazing before you're on stage, and I love that about my job. You have to meet the audience, feel the chemistry between us on stage and the people in the room. But in the last few years I mostly have an amazing time on stage, it’s actually more and more fun every year that passes by! I'm very grateful!
