Eurovision bosses explain how stage invader managed to get past security

SuRie was praised for the way she handled the incident

The producers behind Eurovision have explained how the stage invader who interrupted the UK entry’s performance manage to get on stage.

The European Broadcasting Union revealed that the man managed to infiltrate the camera run before causing the ruckus during SuRie's song.

“A person invaded the main stage during SuRie’s performance at the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final in Lisbon,” the statement reads.

“He climbed into the camera run and reached the main stage via the bridge, pursued by security. He was removed off stage after seven seconds and is being questioned by police.

They added that they take security “seriously” and were launching an investigation into the incident.

The protester, believed to be an activist and rapper who goes by the name Dr ACActivism, compared the UK media to Nazis while dressed in a T-shirt plugging his own e-book before he was tackled by security.

ACActivism has a history of stage invading, having also disrupted the National Television Awards and last year’s The Voice final

​SuRie (real name Susanna Marie Cork), was commended for her dignified reaction to the invasion, having stepped aside and clapped before being handed a microphone and carrying on with the song. She later posted a tongue-in-cheek tweet, saying “well, I’ve always said anything can happen at Eurovision”.

The singer finished third from bottom, ranking 24th out of 26 countries. Israel’s Netta Barzilai won this year’s competition with her dance song Toy.
