Hozier has apologised to fans after accidentally posting a hilarious video of himself to his public Instagram.

The singer delighted his followers with a surprise Instagram story showing the artist using the “Handsome Squidward filter”.

The Instagram filter, which has been used widely across the platform, is based on an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants in which the octopus character becomes unexpectedly chiselled when a door is slammed in his face.

After realising his mistake, Hozier promptly deleted the video after a few minutes and replaced it with a light-hearted apology.

“Hahaha Inconsolable weeping. Christ,” the singer joked. “That handsome Squidward content was just for the boys. Pray for me. Thank you.”

Since the post was shared, Hozier’s name has been trending on Twitter with fans rushing to share their reactions to the amusing clip.

One user wrote, “If you can’t handle Hozier at this handsome squidward accidentally posted to his story then you don’t deserve his singing as it was live.”

Another said, “I’m crying with laughter, I can’t believe hozier uploaded a handsome squidward insta story and promptly deleted, this just made my day.” While a number of users commented on the singer’s perceived resemblance to a “white washed Jesus”.

Hozier previously went viral on Twitter in 2018 after sharing his Spotify round-up for the year which showed the singer’s most played songs of 2016.

The list included a TS Eliot reading of his famous poem “The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock”. Hozier shared a screenshot of the Spotify list and commented on the odd song choice, “Wondering what kinda buzz a lad must’ve been on crawling into his tour bunk listening to J Alfred Prufrock.”

The “Take Me to Church” artist also regularly uses his social media platforms to campaign for more serious causes, including speaking out against domestic violence and racism.
