Macaulay Culkin announces The Pizza Underground album complete with children’s choir and symphony orchestra

Because the joke is just not dead yet, okay?

If you thought you’d heard the last of Macaulay Culkin’s ridiculous pizza-themed Velvet Underground parody band (yes, really), think again.

The former child star best known for Home Alone started The Pizza Underground back in 2013, performing the likes of “All Pizza Parties” (“All Tomorrow’s Parties”), “Take a Bite of the Wild Slice” (“Walk on the Walk Side”) and “Pizza Gal” (“Femme Fatale”). Soon enough, they were booed off stage and everyone thought it was the end, they did use pizza boxes as percussion instruments after all. Surely, surely, Lou Reed’s songs would now be left forever free from far too many references to cheese.

But no. Culkin has been chatting with the Guardian (his biggest interview in 10 years), and it appears that there are many more pizza tunes to bake. So overwhelming is the demand that The Pizza Underground are returning with an album, complete with children’s choir and symphony orchestra.

“It’s one of those good ideas you have when you’re drunk and you wake up and forget about it,” he said. “But we’re taking it to the end of the joke. We have an album coming out, a vinyl pressing with a children’s choir, a symphony orchestra. We’re giving it away, our gift to the world.”

Even if you don’t, Culkin still finds it all hilarious. “Of course I find it funny! We rhyme mushrooms with mushrooms, come on. It’s the same joke, relentlessly. Like, they’re really doing this?”

Perhaps Britain’s Got Talent beckons? If Lorraine Bowen and her “Crumble Song” can get through to the live semi-finals, there’s surely room for Culkin and his pizza.
