Miley Cyrus says ‘we love Britney’ during Super Bowl performance after documentary about star’s conservatorship
Cyrus joined a list of celebrities who extended their support to Britney Spears after a documentary on her conservatorship was released last week
American singer and actor Miley Cyrus gave a shout out to pop icon Britney Spears in a public act of solidarity during a Tik Tok Tailgate performance ahead of Superbowl LV.
“We love Britney!” said Cyrus in the middle of the rendition of her 2009 hit ‘Party in the USA.’
Cyrus joined the list of celebrities who extended their support to the 39-year-old singer after the release of a documentary on her conservatorship on 5 February.
Streaming on Hulu, the documentary explores the career, relationship and the events that led to the 2008 ruling in which the court gave the legal control of Spears' estate and daily life to her father. For the past 13 years, the embattled pop singer has been living under a conservatorship, after several public breakdowns.
The film also looks at the #FreeBritney movement that began on social media to support the singer in her 2020 plea seeking to remove her father as her conservator and be replaced by a third party.
Actor Sarah Jessica Parker, American columnist Meghan McCain, and singer-songwriter Bette Midler tweeted #FreeBritney in support of the singer.
Hayley Williams and Sam Smith were also among the famous personalities who reacted after watching the documentary.
Williams said that the current discourse around mental health awareness would not have happened without the scrutiny that Spears suffered in 2008.
“The Framing Britney Spears doc holy f***. No artist today would have to endure the literal torture that media/society/utter misogynists inflicted upon her,” Ms Williams tweeted.

“The mental health awareness conversation, culturally, could never be where it is without the awful price she has paid,” she said.
Singer Sam Smith retweeted her tweet, while Khloe Kardashian said, "I am praying for queen Britney!"
