Taylor Swift fans think singer called Kanye West a ‘clown’ on new album Folklore
Swift’s fans think they’ve spotted a reference to West on her new album
Taylor Swift’s fans think that they’ve spotted a subtle reference to Kanye West in her new album Folklore.
Last Thursday (23 July), Swift surprised fans by announcing that her new album would be dropping at midnight the following day, less than a year since her last studio album Lover premiered.
Fans have since been combing the songs for clues and Easter Eggs and claim to have found one on the song “Peace”, which features the lyric: “But there’s robbers to the east / Clowns to the West.”
On the official lyric video accompanying the track on YouTube, the word “West” is capitalised, whereas “east” is in lower case, leading fans to believe Swift is referencing the rapper or his wife, Kim Kardashian West.
“The way Taylor Swift said in peace “robbers to the east, clowns to the West.” Notice how “east” is in small caps while “West” is in capital letters. She’s definitely referencing Kanye West I’m screamingggg,” one fan wrote.
Another tweeted: “Nobody: Me: in Peace, Taylor Swift capitalised West but not east. She called Kanye a clown.”
The Independent has approached Swift and West’s representatives for comment.
Swift and West have been in a longstanding feud since the 2009 MTV VMAs. Some critics have suggested that the “I Knew You Were Trouble” singer released Folklore last Friday to coincide with the intended release date of West’s new project Donda: With Child.
However, Swift stated that she hadn’t “overthought” the new release date, writing on social media: “Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed.”
The Independent’s Roisin O’Connor gave Folklore a four-star review, writing: “This shimmering album is exquisite, piano-based poetry.”
