Album: Heath Brothers, Endurance (Jazz Legacy)
Soon, jazz like this won’t exist any more.
Saxophonist Jimmy Heath and his drummer-brother Albert “Tootie” Heath are knocking on 80 now (elder brother Percy, bassist with the MJQ, died in 2005) and they display the easy, unforced swing that comes with playing 200 gigs a year for most of their lives. This quartet session is nice enough, but the opening tune, “Changes”, is an absolute miracle of a loping Latin groove featuring a continuous tenor solo by Jimmy – half Lester Young, half Coltrane – that could go on for ever.
