Steve Winwood was the boy genius of British R'n'B, blessed with a soulful voice way beyond his tender years, and a multi-instrumental facility on anything bearing keys or strings.
But like all talented teens, his gifts needed context and guidance, which this compilation suggests were best provided by Jimmy Miller, whose production work on the classic Spencer Davis Group and Traffic material was revelatory. The remastering emphasises the SDG's propulsive muscularity, but the set falls down in trying to condense Traffic's achievements into just four tracks, while Winwood's patchier solo career is covered in greater depth. Can't argue with just one track from the doomed Blind Faith project, though.
