Lin Manuel-Miranda and original Hamilton cast reunite for young fan

The Hamilton film is heading to Disney+ a year earlier than expected.

A filmed version of the hip hop-inspired Broadway musical was originally scheduled for cinema release in 2021, but has been brought forward and will be going straight to streaming during coronavirus lockdown.

The news was shared on Twitter by Hamilton writer, composer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who tweeted: “It’s only a matter of time… Our Hamilton film. THIS July 3rd. On Disney+. #Hamilfilm.”

Filmed in New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre over the course of three performances from 2016, the movie will give fans a chance to see the original Broadway cast, including Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Jonathan Groff and Daveed Diggs, in their roles.

Speaking about the film in January, Miranda told Variety: “You all have that friend that is like, ‘I saw it with the original cast’. We’re stealing that brag from everyone because you’re all going to see it with the original cast.”

Hamilton tells the true story of the American revolution and the invention of the US banking system through the eyes of ambitious politician Alexander Hamilton and won numerous awards for its diverse casting and inventive storytelling.

Miranda’s other musical, In The Heights, has also been adapted into a film and is scheduled for cinema release in June 2021.
