David Jason says he was almost killed by a giant sugar cube while filming PG Tips advert

Sir David Jason has revealed that he was nearly killed by a giant falling sugar cube while filming a PG Tips advert in 1977.

The Only Fools and Horses star featured in an advertisement for the popular tea brand, for which he was placed inside a ginormous cup of tea.

Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on ITV's This Morning, Jason said: “That nearly ended my career, that. Because they had the props guys up on a gantry, throwing that sugar cube, giant sugar cube, down onto me, or into the teacup.”

Jason said that for the first few takes, the fake cubes they were using tended to float to the surface.

“The director kept saying ‘make it heavier, make it heavier’. So eventually it took about four props boys to lift this sugar cube like this, and they dropped it.

“It went past and touched my nose as it went through into the teacup. Well that could have very nearly, had it hit me on the head, it would have been ‘David Jason killed by sugar cube’ which wouldn’t have been a very good epitaph.”

The actor was appearing on the programme to promote his new autobiography, A Del of a Life.
