Dexter reboot will be set 10 years after much-hated series finale

Showrunner also confirmed reboot will ignore controversial ‘lumberjack’ ending of original series

The forthcoming reboot of Showtime’s hit serial killer drama Dexter will be set a decade after the end of the original series.

Dexter, which starred Michael C Hall as sympathetic Miami serial killer Dexter Morgan, ran from 2006 to 2013.

Its final episode, which concluded with Dexter assuming a new identity as a solitary lumberjack in Oregon, was widely disliked by fans and critics, and is frequently ranked among the worst TV finales of all time.

However, it was announced last month that the series was being revived for a limited run by Showtime, with Hall confirmed to reprise the title role.

The Hollywood Reporter stated that the series would be set a decade after the current finale, during a podcast interview with showrunner Clyde Phillips.

Phillips said: “We basically do get to start from scratch. We want this to not be Dexter season nine. Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage.”

He added: “In so far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show, and Showtime was very gracious about that.”

Dexter will bring back original director Marcos Siega to direct six of the 10 new episodes. He will also serve as executive producer, with Phillips returning as showrunner.
