An animated prequel to Gremlins is in development, set to debut on WarnerMedia’s proposed streaming service.

Variety reports that the show will focus on Mr Wing, played in Gremlins and its sequel by Keye Luke, as he sets out on a series of adventures with the Mogwai Gizmo.

The series will be produced by the television branches of the companies behind the original films, Warner Bros and Amblin.

Tze Chu, who has written for shows like Gotham and Once Upon a Time, is attached to write and executive produce. He is also the co-founder of comic book publisher TKO Studios.

The first Gremlins film, directed by Joe Dante, was released in 1984 and proved to be a major box office success, grossing over $153m worldwide. Gremlin 2: The New Batch was released in 1990, with Dante directing once more.

Warner Media’s new service will first be launched as a beta, with original content set to begin launching in 2020. It’s also been suggested that the service will be the eventual home of Friends, meaning the sitcom will inevitably be pulled from Netflix.
