Jon Stewart has weighed in on the current debates regarding policing in America, saying that police are “enforcing segregation” in the country.

The former late-night host spoke to The New York Times ahead of the release of his film Irresistible, a political comedy which he wrote and directed.

During the interview, Stewart was asked to share his thoughts about the death of George Floyd and the ensuing movement against anti-racism, which has resulted in action and protests across the US.

Stewart responded by sharing his point of view about policing in general, telling the newspaper: “The police are a reflection of a society. They’re not a rogue alien organisation that came down to torment the black community.

“They’re enforcing segregation. Segregation is legally over, but it never ended.

“The police are, in some respects, a border patrol, and they patrol the border between the two Americas. We have that so that the rest of us don’t have to deal with it.”

Four former Minneapolis, Minnesota officers have been charged in the death of Floyd.

Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder.

Three other former officers, Thomas Lane, J Kueng, and Tou Thao, are facing aiding and abetting charges.
