‘Big day for Maya Rudolph’: SNL fans rejoice as Joe Biden announces Kamala Harris as VP pick
Rudolph portrays the Democratic VP pick on ‘Saturday Night Live’
When Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris as his running mate on Tuesday, a particular group erupted in cheers — specifically, fans of Maya Rudolph and Saturday Night Live.
Rudolph has portrayed Harris on SNL since late 2019, when Harris was still a presidential contender.
With Harris as the Democratic VP pick for the 2020 presidential race, viewers should expect to see more of Rudolph on SNL when the show is expected to return in the autumn.
“The real winner today is Maya Rudolph,” author Roxane Gay commented shortly after Biden’s announcement.
Journalist Geoff Bennett deemed Tuesday “a big day for Maya Rudolph”, while many others shared similar quips on social media.
Harris herself has endorsed Rudolph’s impersonation of her. Back in September 2019, she humorously shared a gif of Rudolph in her Harris costume, writing: ”That girl being played by @MayaRudolph on @nbcsnl? That girl was me.”
SNL‘s 45th season ended in May this year, after the coronavirus pandemic forced the show to be produced remotely.
No premiere date has been announced yet for the 46th season. It remains unclear whether it could be filmed in the show’s New York City studios, or whether production would have to continue from a distance.
