The Handmaid's Tale gets a season 3 after doubling audience with season 2

The Emmy and Golden Globe-winner could go for 10 seasons

Hulu has renewed The Handmaid's Tale amid critical acclaim for its currently-airing second season.

The announcement was made during a presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers on Wednesday, THR reports.

Like Netflix and Amazon, Hulu doesn't release ratings specifics but did reveal that the season 2 premiere doubled the number of viewers from season 1's. This is a good sign for the show, the other major water cooler show at the minute - Westworld - only matching its season 1 audience when it returned recently.

Three episodes of The Handmaid's Tale season 2 have been released in the US so far, with a UK broadcast through Channel 4 expected to follow.

Last year, the show earned the landmark honour of being the first original series from a streaming service to land the Emmys' biggest award, Best Drama. It went on to pick up Golden Globes and Peabodys too.

Creator Bruce Miller previously suggested that the show could go on way longer than three seasons.

"When I started, I tried to game out in my head what would ten seasons be like?" he told The New York Times. "If you hit a home run, you want energy to go around the bases, you want enough story to keep going, if you can hook the audience to care about these people enough that they’re actually crying at the finale."
