Elijah Wood visited a stranger’s Animal Crossing island to sell his turnips

Like all of us, the Lord of the Rings actor is also killing time with Animal Crossing

Elijah Wood surprised a fan by privately asking to sell her turnips in a game of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The video game enables players to buy and offload turnips at a profit, with a “turnip exchange” granting strangers the opportunity to purchase vegetables from players they don’t know.

The Lord of the Rings actor revealed himself to be an Animal Crossing devotee by sliding into the private Twitter messages of a fellow player, after she posted about her turnip prices.

“Guys I tweeted my turnip prices and Elijah Wood just came to my island and hung out,” tweeted @directedbyrian. “This is the best day in quarantine yet.”

The user, whose real name is Jessica, additionally posted a screenshot of her initial interaction with Wood, in which his verified Twitter account asks: “Would love your dodo code to sell these turnips”.

A “dodo code” enables Animal Crossing players to temporarily visit “islands” owned by other gamers.

Screenshots from Wood’s presence in Jessica’s island show his screen name as “elwood” and his uncanny avatar, which sports a slick of brown hair and Converse trainers.

Wood subsequently picked fruit, mingled with Jessica and her friends and talked with them about his love of Rian Johnson’s film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He also managed to offload some of his turnips.

Animal Crossing has become a video game sensation amid the coronavirus pandemic, though it has come under criticism for teaching children “toxic messages” about capitalism and the environment.
