The Last Of Us Part 2 breaks record to become UK's biggest PS4 launch ever
Acclaimed action game sold 40 per cent more physical copies during launch than Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The Last of Us Part II has broken the record to become the biggest UK PlayStation 4 exclusive game launch ever.
Naughty Dog’s action-horror sequel also overtook Nintendo’s social simulator Animal Crossing: New Horizons to become the fastest-selling game of the year on any platform.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, The Last of Us Part II beat the previous PS4 exclusive record-holder - Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which was also developed by Naughty Dog – by just over 1 per cent.
The charts only include physical sales; once digital purchases are factored into the equation, the difference is expected to be even larger.
Day one sales of The Last of Us Part II were also 76 per cent bigger than comparable figures for the original Last of Us, which was released on PlayStation 3 in 2013.
The Last of Us Part II continues to follow the characters of Ellie and Joel from the first game, played by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. As Ellie, players must contend with a world populated with cannibalistic zombies, as well as ruthless human militias.
In The Independent‘s review, the game is described as “bleak, distressing and tremendously violent”, while also being “peerlessly good”.
The Last of Us is also being adapted into a TV series for HBO; Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin is attached to write and executive produce.
