A leaked product description for the upcoming video game Marvel’s Avengers has suggested that Spider-Man could be a playable character.

According to the unverified rumour, the famous web-slinger would only be available on the PlayStation 4 version of the game, even though Avengers will also be released on Xbox One and PC, before arriving on next-generation consoles at the end of the year.

Sony, which owns PlayStation, also owns the rights to the character of Spider-Man. The 2018 game Spider-Man remains one of the most popular and acclaimed games available on the PS4 console.

The rumour of Spidey’s inclusion began when a retail listing from online retailer Base.com featured the claim that Spider-Man will be available “exclusively on PS4”. The post has since been removed.

While many fans expressed excitement at the prospect of Spider-Man joining the other Avengers, others were sceptical about the veracity of the leak.

“Take this with a fistful of salt”, wrote one commentator on Twitter. Others noted that the release date listed on the now-deleted post was incorrect.

Square Enix, who are publishing Marvel’s Avengers, previously said that “those playing on PlayStation 4 will have an exclusive surprise”.

The game doesn’t use any of the actor’s likenesses from the Marvel films but does include a roster of familiar characters, including Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Captain America. Players will also be able to play as Ms Marvel, who has not yet appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Square Enix recently announced that the game will be regularly updated post-launch, with the first major update adding Hawkeye as a playable character.

Marvel’s Avengers will be released on 4 September.
