After, ooh, minutes of toiling away on the circuit, Cambridge University alumni Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller hit the critical G-spot with "The Quality Shag" at the Edinburgh Festival in 1996. Cradled in quality sketch material, their delicately formed comedy personae - from the phonetically challenged Strijka, Norway's third most popular band, to Tam and Kip, ageing Vegas crooners - earned them a Perrier Award nomination, which begat a series on Paramount, which begat a series on Channel 4 and their own MTV cult show, So Nineties. Fame, fortune and the small matter of having to pen another series for Channel 4 have kept them away from practising their craft in front of pint-in-hand mortals. Tonight, though, it's payback time: the Komedia gave them the time of day when they were just mates of a freshfaced comedy duo called Mel and Sue. Look out for new material and prepare to hold your lighter aloft for the triumphant return of Strijka.
