Over the choker? This is the new grown-up way to wear the trend

The retro style has been given a ritzy update for 2017

Alexa Chung might have declared the choker ‘dead’ months ago, but if the new season runways are anything to go by, this retro accessory isn’t going anywhere.

Just when you thought it was over, the Nineties neck accoutrement has once again climbed its way back into the sartorial spotlight.

But, pay attention because no ordinary choker will do this season. Instead, it’s time to ditch the chunky, velveteen trimmings you’ve become accustomed to in favour of those with a more feminine flourish.

Like most trends, the choker is constantly evolving and its most recent update comes with a smattering of jewels, delicate chains, gems and pearls.

As such, the grungy style instantly becomes more wearable to even the most dubious among us - combining the ritzy qualities of jewellery with the ease of a single accessory.

At Celine, a simple leather string was adorned with a single pearl while creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri saw fit to reprise the Nineties staple at Dior with a jewelled statement that read “J’adore.”

For Lanvin, there were clusters of amber crystal and gold shiny necklaces twisted together. Chanel stacked its glittery versions on top of each other coupling with signature tweed and Gucci updated its gothic chokers with red and jet-black gems cast in gold.

The great thing about this new way to wear the trend is that it offers a grown-up way to decorate your neck without sacrificing on style.

These chokers still retain the grungy appeal of last season’s counterparts but they also have the added benefit of girlish embellishment and a feminine flair.

If up until this point you’ve steered well-clear of the accessory in fear of resembling a teeny bopper, now is your chance to jump on board.

Start with a single chain that fits snug on the neck and gradually update with precious stones, structural shapes and gems. Whatever you do, just be sure to give the yin and yang symbols a miss.
