Remember when your advent calendar was film-themed and confectionary-filled – or from Thorntons, if you were really posh? Cast chocolate asunder: advent calendars have gone A-list. Most also seem strictly secular. The point? To bestow upon the owner a gift every day of the Yuletide month. Sounds appealing to me.

Beauty brands have taken to the trend with gusto; the Jo Malone version (1) which comes filled with all manner of scented loveliness, is number one on my wishlist.

Not far behind is Liberty's calendar (2), the department store utilising the opportunity to show off its burgeoning beauty hall with goodies from the likes of Byredo and Diptyque hidden behind the artfully painted doors.

I'll be stuffing my jewellery box, rather than my face, over the festive period thanks to the calendar from Freedom at Topshop (3), each door hiding bijou treasures but nevertheless coming in at the lower end of the price spectrum. For an (almost) DIY approach, why not invest in Villeroy & Boch's calendar (4); the luxurious, Lilliputian porcelain drawers come ready to fill with whatever you fancy and can be recycled year after year.

If that's given you a taste for the deluxe, look no further than Dior's (5) annual calendar, packed with a selection of the world's most stylish chocolates and tree ornaments.

Unfortunately for us mere mortals it's only available as a gift from the brand to its boutique clients, meaning you'll need a rather major clothing budget to get your hands on it.

For something more visually led (and free!) it's almost time for the unveiling of LOVE magazine's offering (6). Yes, even fashion mags are getting in on the Christmas spirit – Love's take on an advent calendar is a daily video release of some of the world's most famous models – including Miss Kendall Jenner – cavorting in their smalls, decked out in Boucheron fine jewellery. Festive and frisky. Not one to open at your desk, though.
