From the flight jackets of the early 1900s, to those worn by the stars of the silver screen and riotous 1970s punk bands, leather jackets have a long and complicated history.

The kind of item that always looks so effortless on famous men like Marlon Brando and James Dean, it’s one of those pieces that never go out of style. But, can it really work for you?

We’re not just talking biker jackets here either. Today, brands are offering more and more styles in the tough fabric than ever before. But with more choice, comes greater confusion.

On the runway this season, Prada presented everything from knee-length trench coats to boxy styles in the hard-wearing material, while Danish brand Tonsure paired patent leather jackets with matching Bon Jovi-style trousers.

At Paul Smith, more traditional coats came edged with leather trims and padded shoulders while bikers reigned supreme at John Lawrence Sullivan, where a collection inspired by the Seventies showcased worn-out styles with tough zippers, boots and dark blue denim.

But, while Matrix-esque, floor-length leather coats and matching slacks à la Ross from Friends might look at home on the runway, you’ll do well to steer clear of such pairings in real life.

Many men wince at the mere thought of wearing leather, out of fear of looking like they belong to an outlaw motorcycle gang or of being in the midst of a mid-life crisis.

But, find one that fits like a dream and it will surely become the most powerful piece of clothing you own.

Both risky and classic at the same time, wearing a leather jacket well means it should look nonchalant, like something you’ve just thrown on without a second thought. The trick here is to make sure it’s the statement piece of your outfit by pairing it with unsuspecting items like slim-fit jeans, a T-shirt and boots or trainers.

If a biker is too rough and ready for your style, opt for a varsity-inspired bomber instead, with a wool body and leather sleeves.

Or, if that still sounds a bit too much, invest in your regular style of coat but look out for options that come with leather panelling and detailing, typically applied to the shoulders.
