Silver lining: How to wear metallics by day or night

Metallics in the winter are the way to go and this year it’s silver that’s taking the reins.

The go-to choice for party outfits, space-age shades promise to give your look a flourish but this season the runways are set out to prove that it’s time to switch up your tailoring template with flashes of silver too.

At Balmain, Olivier Rousteing’s army found its uniform in iridescent trouser suits and holographic shirts.

Elsewhere, Christopher Kane upgraded two-pieces and structured midi dresses with intricate silver brocade, while Tom Ford’s models paired metallic tuxedo jackets with grown-up lame leggings.

The trend extended beyond eveningwear too with a number of designers, including Christian Dior and Marques Almeida, swathing everything from overcoats to longline bomber jackets in the future-proof hue.

Of all the trends doing the rounds right now, metallics might be the best at instantly transforming an outfit but if you thought they were the solve reserve of the dance floor it’s time to think again.

While silver adds a touch of glamour for the evening – think shimmery sequin skirts, high heels and sparkly dresses – whatever you do, don’t save them for the night hours alone.

During the day, the key is to keep the rest of your look simple so avoid wearing bold colours or prints at the same time.

Instead, you can make something like a sequin work by pairing it with a simple T-shirt and ankle boots or even trainers for the ultimate high/low mix.

Alternatively, experiment with unexpected flashes of metallic with subtle lightweight knitwear or even a trusty new carryall.
