“Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking.” The line from surly fashion editor Miranda Priestly in the film The Devil Wears Prada is famous, and she certainly has a point. While florals are a little overdone when it comes to spring/summer, for winter however, they offer something a little more interesting.

Any consideration of botanicals usually brings to mind all things bright, bold and colourful, understandably characteristics that most prefer to reserve for fairer weather. Just like the temperature most of us find the vibrancy of our wardrobes really takes a plunge when autumn arrives. This doesn't necessarily mean forgoing florals altogether though, forget prissy bouquets instead look for moody blooms with just the right amount of edge.

Designers took to this trend with gusto, eschewing any thoughts of minimalism, the autumn/winter proposition for florals is an unapologetically opulent one. Think luxurious fabrics and detailing; velvet and brocade featuring heavy embroidery and embellishment as seen at Dolce & Gabbana and Balenciaga. A rich colour palette of midnight blue, oxblood and emerald add to the decadent feel of the florals.

This is ideal for evening wear as we move into party season, but it's also a look that can be adjusted to become daytime appropriate. Now is the time to embrace your inner grunge in the style of Courtney Love; think floaty floral dresses teamed with leather jackets and clunky boots. For a more modern interpretation opt for an embroidered bomber jacket simply teamed with a pair of jeans and a white shirt.

A more modest approach to the trend should consider accessories; a pair of killer stilettos or an evening bag are instantly refreshed with the addition of flower motifs. Finally those with a flair for drama might want to look out for floral designs which feature lace overlays and trims, high necks and billowing sleeves for a more Victoriana gothic take on the trend.
