As most Floridians braced for Hurricane Irma’s arrival this weekend, millions decided to flee their homes, stock up on emergency supplies and board up windows. However, others planned for the deadly storm in a very different way – by baking cakes.

Just days before the Category 4 hurricane hit the U.S, a shopper at a Publix supermarket in Florida reportedly took a photo of a Hurricane Irma-themed cake on display in the bakery section.

The same photo was then circulated by Miami radio and talk show personality Andy Slater, who caption the image with, “In good taste?”

Soon enough, other Irma-themed cakes began to surface online, all allegedly from Publix.

Deciding that the historic moment deserved to be immortalised in sponge, some of the cakes that have been spotted include layers decorated with a map of Florida showing Irma’s projected path, cookie cakes with “Weather It Out” written in icing, and even some adorned with tiny deck chairs and palm trees sticking out at haphazard angles.

The internet is of course divided. Some Twitter users think that the cakes are a show of typical Floridian humour, appreciating the message and even wishing they had their own.

“Publix cakes are ALWAYS in good taste, why even ask??? ‪#essentialhurricanesupplies,” one person wrote.

Captioning an image of a cake that reads “Go away Irma”, someone else said, “This cake from a Publix in Jacksonville is saying what we're all thinking.”

Not everyone saw the funny side though and became concerned that the confections were trivialising a deadly storm that had already taken numerous lives.

“Maybe a hurricane-themed cake wasn't such a good idea?” one person tweeted at Publix.

Another added, “Might be OK if it wasn't a [Category 4] storm that will kill people.”
