A white from Piedmont…

Cascina Valentino Roero Arneis, Piedmont, 2015

Made from the obscure arneis grape, native to north-west Italy and something of gem in Lidl’s excellent spring range. It’s a very modern style of white: crisp with floral overtones and a distinct touch of smoke, distinctive and satisfying. Good for fish and white meat dishes like veal escalopes.

A red from Sicily…

Etna Rosso DOC 2014 – Planeta

Volcanic soils and higher altitudes create some fascinating wines and none more so than this medium bodied, succulent, juicy red from the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, made from the nerello mascalese grape. Full of bright red fruits, but with a beguiling underlying earthiness, similar to a Beaujolais-Villages wine. Perfect for all tomato-based Mediterranean foods, chicken dishes or, very lightly chilled, with fish.

A dessert wine from Tuscany…

Da Vinci Vin Santo 2008

After two unusual wines, here is a firm traditional tipple, made from dried trebbiano grapes aged in oak and full of honeyed flavours of dried fruits. To be savoured, chilled, with rich puddings, blue cheeses like gorgonzola or to dip almond biscotti biscuits into, alongside a bitter espresso.
