A swimwear designer has revealed the extent social media users go to on Instagram to edit their images in a bid to make themselves appear “perfect”.

Karina Irby uploaded a video post of two side-by-side images of herself wearing a bikini which showed how she manipulated one into the other through a few simple editing tricks.

“Introducing to you the classic ‘Insta Girl Edit’, she writes, “where the skin gets smoother, the ass gets better, the boobs get bigger, the waist gets smaller and online confidence goes through the roof,” she writes.

In the short clip, the 28-year-old shows how some quick editing hacks can make her skin appear smoother, her figure look trimmer and her breasts look larger.

Airby even took to editing some of her facial features, highlighting her cheekbones to make them appear sharper.

The Australian designer, who regularly posts pictures of herself in bikinis to promote her brand, went on to explain in the caption how the ability to edit images to the nth degree online can have a negative impact on confidence levels in young women.

“But what happens offline?” her post continues.

“When did we lose our little girl confidence? When we were young we didn’t care how we look, and we surely didn’t compare ourselves to the girl next to us.”

Airby added that “endlessly comparing ourselves to others” often exacerbates insecurities and makes people feel less comfortable in their own skin.

This is something she confessed to struggling with herself.

“The sooner we decide to accept ourselves for who we are and care less about other people’s criticism, the happier we are going to be,” she concludes.

“I know from first hand experience I am.”

Airby’s poignant post clearly struck a chord with her 840,000 followers, which has now been liked more than 269,000 times.

“So much love and respect for the way you represent yourself,” commented one person, “it’s really insane how so many of us can get caught up and attached to what happens in tiny squares on the Internet.”
