BMW 320d Touring ED Plus auto, motoring review: Bigger, more practical and more efficient

The new 3 Series estate is a winner

BMW has already revamped its 3 Series this year, and with a new engine, better transmission and uprated suspension, this 320d Touring Efficient Dynamics (ED) is the most practical, most efficient version yet.

The improved efficiency comes courtesy of active aerodynamics, 16in alloys and, at 161bhp, less horsepower from the 2.0-litre diesel. A special Eco Pro mode tweaks steering characteristics and engine braking to further enhance its green credentials. The essential figures are a claimed 70.6mpg and 104g/km of CO2, proving enticing for private and company car buyers alike.

The engine is still muscle enough for everyday driving, even if it’s not as refined as we’d like, and we can’t fault the slick ’n’ quick sector-leading eight-speed auto, which sends power to the real wheels. Relaxing handling suits this lower-powered model, and £750 adaptive dampers tauten things up in Sport driving mode.

ED Plus spec brings a generous helping of interior kit, and all models provide plenty of space for four adults. Of most importance in an estate is the boot size, and while the Touring’s luggage space may not be class-leading, it’s sufficiently large. It’s easy to load, too, particularly thanks to the powered tailgate and separately lifting rear window.

In 320d Touring ED Plus form, little driving quality is lost and plenty is gained in the running costs department. Add in strong projected residuals, and this compact executive diesel estate makes even more sense.
