Boris Johnson's full address to the UK on the fight against coronavirus

The prime minister has confirmed that hairdressers in England can reopen from 4 July.

Ever since lockdown began on 23 March, hair salons across the UK have been closed in a bid to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Now, in a new speech delivered in the House of Commons on 23 June, Mr Johnson confirmed that hairdressers in England can reopen in 11 days’ time and will need to use “visors” to ensure people’s safety.

The prime minister also confirmed that a review of social distancing has concluded that the two-metre rule in place since March can be reduced to one metre.

Here’s everything you need to know about when and how hairdressers will reopen.

When will hairdressers reopen?

Hairdressers will be able to open as England enters the third phase of the government’s plan, which begins on 4 July.

However, the prime minister said that “appropriate precautions” will be implemented to ensure that people remain safe during their appointment.

What about the rest of the UK?

The leaders of the four nations of the UK are choosing different ways to ease the coronavirus restrictions, with first ministers Nicola Sturgeon, Mark Drakeford and Arlene Foster all rejecting Mr Johnson’s new “stay alert” slogan when it was implemented.

Currently, the devolved nations have not provided dates for when they expect hairdressers to reopen.

What changes will happen to ensure staff and customer safety?

When hair salons re-open, it is likely that they will have to follow new safety measures to stop the virus spreading in order to make them Covid-secure.

For example, Mr Johnson mentioned the use of “visors” will be required inside hairdressers, though he did not specify the type of visor.

A number of European countries have already begun reopening salons including France where salons do not accept walk-in clients and everyone is asked to wear masks and gowns and use hand sanitiser gel, disinfectants and disposable gloves.

Germany has also reopened hair salons but is only allowing stylists to dry cut hair and ensure that every other salon chair is left empty. Blow-drys are discouraged and gloves must be worn until a customer’s hair is washed.

How can I support my local hairdresser?

One of the best ways to support your local hair salon is to buy a gift voucher now that you can use once they have reopened.

Hairdressers will also be very busy when they do reopen, so if your salon is offering a waiting list, it might be worth putting your name down now.

How can I look after my hair in the meantime?
