The Brylcreem Boy is back. But this being the Nineties, he goes out with a Spice Girl and wears "wet look gel" rather than grease you could use to lubricate a bus axle.

After years of trying to ditch its traditional image and reposition itself as a modern "grooming aid", Brylcreem has returned to its roots and named David Beckham (right), the Manchester United and England footballer, as heir to Denis Compton's slicked-back mantle (above).

Beckham's fee is thought to depend on how well he does in the run- up to next year's World Cup finals.
