The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) will announce if it has approved Travis Perkins's £558m takeover of builders' merchants BSS on Tuesday.

Travis had expected the go-ahead last month, but OFT delayed to scrutinise some potential competition issues. The OFT fined FTSE-100 group Reckitt Benckiser £10.2m last week for anti-competitive behaviour related to the supply of Gaviscon to the NHS. The fine was reduced from £12m after it admitted fault.

BAA to seek more time to sell airports

Heathrow-owner BAA will ask the Competition Commission to give it more time to sell Stansted and Glasgow or Edinburgh airports if it is unsuccessful in its appeal against a break-up. BAA hopes to go to the Supreme Court in a final attempt to stop the forced sale of the airports. When the commission made its initial decision in 2009, it gave BAA a two-year timetable, but the operator will argue that the economy will not allow it to get fair prices.

Camera-maker Canon to open media consultancy

Canon has branched out into services with a new consultancy arm to help companies streamline their handling of information, images and other media assets. The Japanese camera-maker said last week that it has signed a four-year deal with Accenture to break into the European business process re-engineering market, which it estimates is worth £8.4bn. The new consultancy has permission to recommend products made by other manufacturers.
