New York’s Plaza Hotel penthouse back on the market for $50m: in pictures

The ‘attic’ penthouse on the 20th floor of the legendary Plaza Hotel goes on the market again this week for just $50 million – $9 million less than the reported asking price in 2013.

The four-bedroom, 6,319 square foot penthouse, described as the “epitome of New York luxury” made headlines when one of its previous would-be purchasers, Russian billionaire Andrei Vavilov sued the Plaza Hotel in 2008 to get his deposit back claiming the property was not up to his expectations, and the developer counter-sued.

The palatial property, which has a home office overlooking Central Park, was later acquired by London property tycoon Christian Candy for a price of $25.9 million.

According to the Wall Street Journal, he and his brother’s interior design company Candy & Candy refit the interior and put it back on the market in 2013 for more than double price he paid for it: $59 million. The apartment was offered for sale at that time so soon after its purchase because Mr. Candy received "an unsolicited offer" that made a sale "the most sensible option".

Now the listing is back and with a big price drop to $49,950,000.

With access via the main stair or private elevator, the penthouse suite has two bathrooms, two vast walk-in closets, a laundry room and wet bar. The Eastern wing of the residence overlooks Fifth Avenue, and includes a large eat-in kitchen with wine cellar and informal dining and media room.
