Royal Mail set to appoint first female chief

The head of Canada Post is in talks to become the next chief executive of the Royal Mail, it was learned today.

An announcement is expected in the coming days confirming the appointment of Moya Greene, who has been in her job since 2005, sources told the Press Association.

She would take over from Adam Crozier, who left the Royal Mail just before Easter to become chief executive of ITV.

Ms Greene would be the first female chief executive of the Royal Mail if her appointment is confirmed.

Her appointment will need ministerial approval from the Business Department, which is now headed by Vince Cable.

The Royal Mail declined to comment.

Dave Ward, deputy general secretary of the Communication Workers Union, said: "It's good to see the appointment of a person with a public sector background to Royal Mail.

"It's important that the new chief executive continues to move ahead with business transformation in partnership with the CWU.

"We look forward to meeting Moya Greene and establishing a productive working relationship."
