'The Independent' has always been a pioneer in newspaper and magazine photography - capturing people, places and dramatic moments with an originality never seen before.

Here, we showcase some of our greatest pictures to celebrate a way of looking at the world that is uniquely 'Independent', including the conflict in Kosovo, the handover of Hong Kong, protests in Liverpool, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
