Boris Johnson has denied he dyes his hair and has claimed the admission was a joke.

The Conservative MP and former Mayor of London was reported as saying he dyed his hair to enhance his world-famous trademark blonde mop in an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine.

But Tim Shipman the journalist who interviewed him has said Mr Johnson has requested a point of clarification.

"Boris has requested “an urgent point of clarification” about hair dye. Says he was joking and has “never” used it," Shipman tweeted.

In the original interview, Mr Johnson is quoted as saying, “This is the real thing, it's all natural.” But when Shipman probed him about whether he dyed it, he admitted, “Yes”.

Mr Johnson’s younger sister, Rachel, has also disputed the fact he dyes his hair, arguing that all Johnsons are natural blondes.

“The Boris hair dye reveal is a massive headline grabbing wind-up @ITVAllegra @pestononsunday,” she wrote on Twitter. “All Johnsons are natural blondes!”

This is not the first time there has been speculation surrounding Bojo’s hair. In the summer of last year, Mr Johnson’s hairdresser Heinz Schumi claimed his hair was bleached.

A representative for Mr Johnson did not immediately respond to request for comment.
