A young girl has died after being bitten by a dog, Leicestershire Police said.

A spokesman said: "We were called to a flat in Rowena Court in Mountsorrel at about 12.15pm following a report of a young girl being attacked by a dog, believed to be the family pet.

"She was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham where she has since died."

The spokesman could not confirm the age of the young girl.

Police said the dog died shortly after the attack in the quiet cul-de-sac in Mountsorrel, a town between Leicester and Loughborough.

The spokesman added: "Officers are carrying out inquiries at the scene. The inquiries are at a very early stage."
