A sex attacker who subjected a teenage waitress to a terrifying knifepoint rape ordeal more than 20 years ago faces jail after being caught in a cold case review.

Andrew Riley was just 16 when he and an accomplice offered a lift to their 19-year-old victim in Stockwell, south London, in September 1988.

She was driven around for three hours during which time each of them raped her, before escaping when she said she needed to go to the toilet.

The victim fled to a house where residents alerted police but neither of her attackers could be identified until the case was reopened recently.

Since the crime Riley had been convicted of an indecent assault and a number of offences of dishonesty.

This meant his details were now on the DNA database, allowing officers conducting a cold case review to find the attacker, who is now 39.

The second assailant has never been identified.

Riley, of Drew Road, Canning Town, east London, pleaded guilty to rape when he appeared at the Old Bailey today.

He was remanded in custody, pending reports, to be sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on March 25.

Judge Peter Rook told him: "Rape is always a very serious offence and this was a particularly serious example. There is only one sentence I can pass and that will be a substantial sentence of imprisonment."
