A 19 year-old man has died after being hit by a police car and an ambulance in Suffolk.

The teenager was struck while ”in the carriageway” of the A14 at Rougham in the early hours of Sunday morning, said police.

Neither the police car nor the ambulance were responding to an emergency or using their blue lights at the time of the collision.

Suffolk Constabulary said the police car was taking a suspect in to custody while the ambulance had a patient on board.

Both the police car and the ambulance were travelling behind another car which hit the pedestrian on the westbound carriageway at around 4.30am.

The 19 year-old, who was from the local area, died at the scene but has not yet been formally identified.

Nobody in the three vehicles involved in the collision, or any other motorists, were injured as a result of the accident.

The westbound A14 was closed between junction 45 and 47 while police investigated, leading to a lengthy traffic jam and delays. It was eventually reopened at 2.30pm.

Suffolk Police said they have informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct about the incident.

“The incident occurred on the westbound carriageway at around 4.35am this morning, Sunday 14 October, when a car, followed by a police vehicle and then an ambulance, were all involved in a collision with a man who was in the carriageway,” the force said in a statement.

“Neither the police car or the ambulance were responding to an emergency at the time and as such were not travelling on ‘blue light’ runs. The police vehicle was conveying a person under arrest to custody and the ambulance had a patient on board, however no one in either of these vehicles, or the other car involved, sustained any injuries.”
