Police were investigating reports that a World War Two shell has been found in central London today.

Officers were called by members of the public who suspected they had found the rusting casing of a shell in Lambeth.

Part of Westminster Bridge Road between Morley Street and Gerridge Street, a short distance from the Imperial War Museum, was closed.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed officers were at the scene investigating reports that explosives had been found.
