Learner driver’s test comes to a halt when police seize car

A learner driver was forced to have her test cut short when police discovered a major issue - her instructor’s car was uninsured and did not have an MOT.

The female learner, who is yet to be identified, was driving on Cooks Lane in Birmingham on Saturday with her examiner when the white Ford Fiesta was pulled over by traffic police.

The driving test came to an abrupt end when officers realised the vehicle should not have been on the road, with the examiner and the student given a lift back to the test centre.

The West Midlands Central Motorway Police Group (CPMG) reported the incident on their Twitter account, claiming the “poor student” would have passed the test if it was not for the exceptional circumstances.

Despite not even accruing one minor, the student reportedly had not completed the minimum time required to pass the test so will need to retake at a later stage.

The CPMG have confirmed that even though the student was driving the car at the time, she did not commit an offence.

Instead, any penalties will fall with the driving instructor who was waiting at the test centre while his student was being examined.

They added that although the instructor was a genuine Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), they are “now in possession of their badge”.

It is unclear at this stage whether the student will need to repay the full cost of the driving test, which is £75 on weekends.

Offenders caught driving without insurance can be handed 6-8 penalty points and a £5,000 fine. Driving without an MOT can lead to a £1,000 fine.
