A canoeist died after being pulled from a river in a resuce operation yesterday. The man, in his 30s, became trapped in debris in the River Arkle in the Yorkshire Dales.

Elsewhere, a woman and two-year-old were rescued after falling into the River Thames in Isleworth, while in Somerset a six-month-old baby was rescued after strong winds blew his buggy into Watchet Harbour.
